The ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus in Athens Greece

The towering Corinthian columns of the ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus are rising majestically over the heart of modern Athens. 


Though only 15 remain of its 104 columns, this unfinished temple was once the largest in all of Greece and dedicated to Zeus as "king of the gods." Wandering these soaring ruins dotted with fallen columns, one grasps the sheer mammoth scale and ambition behind its original construction, which began in the 6th century BC. 

Today it is a symbolic icon of ancient Greek architecture and Athens's enduring cultural legacy. No visit to the Greek capital is complete without marvelling at this commanding temple complex.
